Plot

The story begins with journalist Anand Ingalagi, whose banned book El Dorado reveals the hidden history of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) and the rise of a man named Rocky.

In 1951, a powerful don named Suryavardhan discovers gold in Kolar and secretly builds a massive criminal empire under the cover of a limestone mine. He controls KGF through violence and slavery, appointing trusted associates to manage his operations. After suffering a stroke, he names his son Garuda as his successor, leading to power struggles within the syndicate.

Meanwhile, Rocky, born into poverty, grows up with a promise to his dying mother that he will become powerful and rich. He rises through the underworld ranks in Bombay and is eventually hired to assassinate Garuda. After a failed attempt in Bangalore, Rocky infiltrates KGF by posing as a slave.

Inside KGF, he witnesses the brutal treatment of workers and slowly transforms from a self-focused gangster into a symbol of hope. After defeating several guards and gaining the trust of the slaves, Rocky secretly enters Garuda’s mansion during a ritual and kills him in front of everyone, becoming a messiah-like figure for the oppressed workers.

The film ends with Rocky taking control of KGF, while powerful enemies across India prepare to challenge him, setting the stage for the next chapter.

Before release, the film faced legal issues when an interim stay was passed by a Bengaluru court following plagiarism allegations and concerns about the portrayal of Kolar’s history. However, the producer confirmed that the release would proceed as scheduled. Later, the makers also addressed issues related to unauthorized screenings in Australia.

Critical Response

The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise directed toward its cinematography, action sequences, music, narration, and performances — especially Yash’s portrayal of Rocky. Many reviewers appreciated the film’s scale, visual style, and gripping atmosphere, while some critics felt the screenplay and editing could have been tighter. The dialogues and character presentation gained wide popularity and contributed significantly to the film’s mass appeal.

Reviewers from publications such as The Times of India, News18, and Deccan Herald praised the film’s storytelling style, visuals, and performances. Some critics, however, described the film as overlong and heavily focused on hero worship, noting that the narrative sometimes lacked emotional depth. Despite mixed opinions on pacing and writing, most agreed that the film succeeded as a large-scale action entertainer and laid a strong foundation for its sequel.

Character Reception

The character of Rocky received widespread appreciation from critics and audiences. Reviewers highlighted his screen presence, growth arc, and powerful dialogue delivery, with many describing him as a new mass-action icon in Indian cinema.

In January 2021, a new release date of 16 July 2021 was announced, but it was again delayed for the same reason. Eventually, the filmmakers confirmed 14 April 2022 as the final release date, and the film was released worldwide in Kannada along with dubbed versions in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam languages.
