Plot
The story follows Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former national-level wrestler from Balali village in Haryana. Once a celebrated champion in traditional pehlwani wrestling, Mahavir is forced to abandon his sporting dreams to earn a stable livelihood. Regretful that he could never win an international medal for India, he hopes his future son will fulfill that ambition. However, after being blessed with four daughters, he gradually lets go of that dream — until an unexpected incident changes everything.
One day, his elder daughters, Geeta and Babita, physically confront two boys who had mocked them. Witnessing their natural strength and fighting spirit, Mahavir realizes their hidden potential. Determined to challenge social norms, he decides to train them in wrestling — a sport traditionally dominated by men.
His training methods are strict and relentless. Early morning practice sessions, physically exhausting drills, and even cutting their hair short to prevent distractions become part of their routine. Despite criticism from villagers and initial resistance from the girls, Mahavir continues shaping them in a makeshift mud akhada. Over time, Geeta and Babita understand their father’s intentions and begin to embrace the sport wholeheartedly.
As they start competing, the sisters defeat boys in local tournaments, slowly earning recognition. With limited financial resources, Mahavir improvises training equipment and introduces them to freestyle wrestling to prepare them for professional competitions. Geeta soon rises through the ranks, winning state and national-level championships, which eventually earns her admission into the National Sports Academy in Patiala to prepare for the Commonwealth Games.
At the academy, Geeta encounters a new coaching system under her official trainer, whose methods differ significantly from her father’s traditional approach. Influenced by new surroundings and pressured to adapt, she distances herself from Mahavir’s disciplined techniques. This shift affects her performance, leading to disappointing international results.
During a visit home, tensions peak when Geeta challenges her father in a bout and defeats him, symbolizing her growing ego and emotional disconnect. However, Babita later reminds her of the sacrifices Mahavir made for them. Realizing her mistake, Geeta reconciles with her father, restoring both emotional and professional balance.
As the Commonwealth Games approach, complications arise regarding her weight category selection, creating further conflict between Mahavir and the academy authorities. Despite restrictions placed on him, Mahavir continues guiding Geeta indirectly by analyzing her previous matches and offering tactical advice.
In the final moments of the Commonwealth Games, Geeta faces immense pressure. Trailing in the decisive round, she recalls her father’s teachings and executes a high-scoring move in the final seconds. This dramatic turnaround secures her victory, making her the first Indian female wrestler to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
The film concludes on an emotional note, highlighting perseverance, parental sacrifice, and the breaking of gender barriers in Indian sports.

Production
The idea for Dangal originated in 2012 when Divya V. Rao from Disney India’s creative team came across a newspaper feature about Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters. Recognizing its cinematic potential, she shared the concept internally, which eventually reached filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari.
Tiwari personally met Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters to understand their journey. After securing their approval, he collaborated for nearly a year with writers Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain, and Nikhil Mehrotra to develop a detailed screenplay.
Interestingly, Aamir Khan had already interacted with the Phogat sisters on his television show Satyamev Jayate in 2014. When the script was finally narrated to him, he was deeply moved. Though initially hesitant due to the physical demands of portraying an older wrestler, the powerful story convinced him to take up the role.
After completing PK, Khan officially announced the project. He praised the script for combining emotional depth, social relevance, and entertainment in a balanced way.
🎭 Casting
During early casting discussions, several actresses were considered for the roles of Mahavir’s daughters. Eventually, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra were selected to portray the adult versions of Geeta and Babita.
Childhood roles were played by Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar. Over 70 actresses reportedly auditioned before Sakshi Tanwar was finalized as Mahavir’s wife.
Former VJ Aparshakti Khurana made his acting debut in the film. Casting director Mukesh Chhabra handled the extensive audition process to ensure authenticity.
For the Tamil dubbed version, Khan initially explored the idea of having Rajinikanth lend his voice, but the plan was dropped as his iconic voice was considered too distinctive for the character.
Physical Transformation & Training
To convincingly portray Mahavir Singh Phogat at different stages of life, Aamir Khan underwent a dramatic physical transformation. He gained nearly 30 kg, reaching around 98 kg to play the older version of Mahavir. Later, he reduced the weight significantly to depict the younger wrestler.
The cast underwent professional wrestling training under coach Kripa Shankar Patel Bishnoi. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra trained rigorously for months, studying wrestling techniques, body language, and match movements to ensure realism.
The film was produced with an estimated budget of ₹70 crore.
Filming Locations
Principal photography began in September 2015. Several villages in Punjab were modified to resemble Haryana’s rural setting. Key shooting locations included Ludhiana and nearby villages such as Gujjarwal, Narangwal, and Dango.
Wrestling sequences were filmed at Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium and Thyagaraj Stadium. Additional portions were shot at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune.
During production, Aamir Khan suffered minor injuries but resumed filming after recovery. The movie required careful visual planning to represent different time periods, and natural lighting was extensively used to enhance authenticity.
Music
The soundtrack was composed by Pritam, with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Songs like “Dhaakad” and the title track became popular upon release. The music album was launched in November 2016 in multiple languages.
Release & Global Expansion
Dangal premiered in the United States on 21 December 2016 and was released worldwide on 23 December 2016. It was screened on approximately 4,300 screens in India and about 1,000 screens internationally.
The film was declared tax-free in multiple Indian states to promote the government’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative.
Its international success expanded further when it released in China in May 2017 under the title “Shuaijiao Baba.” The film received a standing ovation at the Beijing International Film Festival and later became a massive commercial success in China.
Subsequently, the movie was also released in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and several other territories, further strengthening its global impact.
Reception
Upon release, Dangal received widespread acclaim from critics across India and internationally. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes recorded an approval rating of 89% based on 18 reviews, with an average score of 7.8/10 — reflecting strong overall critical appreciation.
Many reviewers praised the film for blending emotional storytelling with realistic sports drama. Publications such as Filmfare awarded it top ratings, describing the film as gripping and technically accomplished. The Times of India highlighted its inspiring narrative and balance of humor and heartfelt father-daughter moments.
Critics from The Indian Express and NDTV appreciated the film’s feminist undertone and straightforward sports storytelling, noting that it avoided excessive melodrama while maintaining intensity. Reviewers also commended the authenticity of the wrestling sequences and the emotional depth woven into the screenplay.
Internationally, The Hollywood Reporter praised the film’s emotional impact and technical finesse, calling the wrestling scenes intelligent and engaging. Variety similarly acknowledged the depth brought to the central character.
Performances
A significant portion of the praise focused on Aamir Khan for his transformation and layered portrayal of Mahavir Singh Phogat. Critics admired his willingness to shed his superstar image and convincingly embody an aging, flawed yet determined father. Several reviewers described it as one of the finest performances of his career.
The younger and older versions of Geeta, portrayed by Zaira Wasim and Fatima Sana Shaikh, were also widely appreciated for their powerful and believable performances. The chemistry among the cast, particularly the father-daughter dynamic, was frequently highlighted as the emotional backbone of the film.
Criticism & Debate
Despite overwhelming praise, Dangal also sparked discussion regarding its portrayal of feminism. Some critics argued that although the film promotes women’s empowerment, it still centers the father’s ambition, suggesting that the narrative frames empowerment through a patriarchal lens.
Certain reviewers from publications like The Hindu questioned whether the film fully explored the complexities of gender politics. Others debated the depiction of the national coach, feeling that the character was portrayed in an overly negative or simplified manner to elevate the protagonist.
However, these critiques remained part of a broader conversation, as the majority of audiences and critics continued to celebrate the film’s inspirational message and emotional resonance.
International Reception
The film received particularly enthusiastic responses in East Asia. During its release in China, it generated strong word-of-mouth and positive critical coverage. In Japan, it earned high audience ratings and was described by some reviewers as a standout sports drama.
Several Japanese athletes and entertainment personalities publicly praised the film for its motivational theme and realistic wrestling portrayal. Audience polls in Japan placed the movie among the top-rated releases of its debut period.
Overall, Dangal was recognized as not only a commercial blockbuster but also a critically respected film that successfully combined sports, social commentary, and family drama.

- Nearly 200 million views on Tencent Video
- Over 144 million views on iQiyi
- More than 80 million views on Youku
This made it one of the most-watched Indian films ever in the Chinese digital market.
Legacy and Impact
Impact on Global Box Office Trends
Dangal played a crucial role in reshaping the Chinese foreign film market. Alongside the Japanese hit Your Name, it marked a shift where audiences began exploring non-Hollywood cinema more actively.
In 2017, non-Hollywood imports accounted for a significant portion of China’s foreign box office revenue — with Dangal alone contributing a large share.
🇮🇳 Boost to Indian Cinema in China
The film’s unprecedented success opened doors for other Indian films such as:
- Secret Superstar
- Bajrangi Bhaijaan
- Hindi Medium
It significantly increased demand and distribution value for Indian films in the Chinese market.
Influence on Chinese Filmmaking
The film inspired Chinese filmmakers to explore socially driven narratives. Its impact has been linked to later socially themed Chinese hits like Dying to Survive (2018), which focused on real-life struggles within Chinese society.
Political & Cultural Influence
The film was screened at the Indian Parliament to promote women empowerment. It also gained diplomatic attention when Chinese President Xi Jinping mentioned appreciating the film during discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The father-daughter journey resonated strongly with Chinese audiences, often compared to stories of rural athletes achieving global success.
Comparisons in Global Cinema
Several critics have drawn comparisons between Dangal and the Academy Award-nominated film King Richard, as both films portray determined fathers training their daughters to become world champions.
Final Impact
- One of the highest-grossing non-English films globally
- First Indian film to cross $300 million worldwide
- Massive cultural success in China
- Boosted global market for Indian cinema
- Strong influence on sports and women empowerment narratives
Controversies
Although Dangal achieved massive commercial and critical success, the film was also surrounded by several controversies during and after its release.
Political Controversies
Before the film’s release, Aamir Khan faced public backlash over remarks he made in November 2015 regarding rising intolerance in India. His comments sparked widespread debate, with criticism emerging from political groups and sections of the public.
As a result, calls for protests and boycotts began circulating online. The hashtag #BoycottDangal trended on social media platforms around the time of the film’s release in December 2016. Certain political figures and organizations, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad, publicly opposed the film and urged demonstrations against it.
Despite these calls, the controversy did not significantly impact the film’s box office performance in India. In fact, Dangal went on to record exceptional earnings domestically.
🇵🇰 Release Issue in Pakistan
The film also faced hurdles in Pakistan. After the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association imposed restrictions on Pakistani artists working in Indian films, tensions rose between the two film industries.
When Dangal was scheduled for release in Pakistan, the country’s censor board reportedly requested edits to remove scenes featuring the Indian national flag and national anthem. Aamir Khan declined to make these changes, and consequently, the film was not released in Pakistan. Trade analysts had estimated that the film could have earned a significant amount there due to Khan’s popularity.
Award Controversies
At the 64th National Film Awards, a debate arose regarding the Best Actor category. While Aamir Khan was widely praised for his performance in Dangal, the award was ultimately presented to Akshay Kumar for his role in Rustom.
This decision sparked discussion in media circles, with some critics and fans expressing surprise. A member of the awards jury clarified that various factors influenced the committee’s decision.
Additionally, Dangal was absent from the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA Awards) nominations that year. According to organizers, the production team had not submitted the film for consideration, which is a required process for nomination.
Impact of the Controversies
Despite political debates and award-related discussions, none of these controversies diminished the film’s commercial momentum or cultural impact. Dangal continued its strong theatrical run and eventually became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
