Plot
After the Indian government revokes Article 370 in 2019, a terminally ill Pakistani Army officer, General Qadir, seeks revenge against India and partners with a private terrorist group known as Outfit X. Meanwhile, RAW agent Pathaan returns to duty and begins investigating a growing international threat connected to the organization.
Pathaan and fellow officer Nandini Grewal form a covert unit called J.O.C.R., consisting of retired agents willing to continue serving the country. During a mission in Dubai, they attempt to stop a planned attack but discover that Outfit X’s real objective is to kidnap two scientists linked to a dangerous project. The operation introduces Jim, a former Indian agent who turned rogue after a tragic personal loss and now leads Outfit X.
As Pathaan tracks the conspiracy across Europe, he encounters Rubina “Rubai” Mohsin, a former ISI agent with ties to the operation. Their alliance becomes complicated when Pathaan learns about a mysterious codeword called “Raktbeej.” After a series of betrayals and confrontations, Pathaan discovers that Raktbeej refers to a deadly mutated virus being developed as a biological weapon.
With time running out, Pathaan and Rubai join forces to stop Jim’s plan to unleash the virus. Their mission takes them from Siberia to India, where they attempt to prevent a large-scale attack involving missiles and a passenger aircraft carrying the virus. After an intense mid-air confrontation, Pathaan manages to neutralize the threat and defeat Jim.
In the aftermath, Pathaan is reinstated and appointed as the head of J.O.C.R., tasked with mentoring a new generation of agents. A mid-credits scene shows Pathaan and Tiger discussing retirement but ultimately deciding to continue protecting the country.

Casting
Casting for the film was handled by Shanoo Sharma. Shah Rukh Khan was signed for the lead role in September 2020. Deepika Padukone joined the project later that year, while John Abraham became part of the main cast in mid-2021. Dimple Kapadia was also cast in an important role. Salman Khan was confirmed for a special cameo appearance, reprising his popular character from the Tiger franchise.
Filming
Principal photography began in November 2020 in Mumbai. In early 2021, the production moved to Dubai where several large-scale action sequences were filmed. Shooting was temporarily paused due to COVID-19 related restrictions but resumed later at Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai. Additional schedules included song and action sequences shot in Spain, particularly in Mallorca and Cádiz. The film wrapped after completing major shoots in Mumbai, followed by some additional scenes and reshoots in late 2022. The movie was filmed across multiple international locations, including India, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Russia, Italy and France. It also became one of the first Indian films to shoot scenes near Siberia’s Lake Baikal.
Music
The soundtrack of Pathaan featured songs composed by Vishal–Shekhar, with lyrics written by Kumaar. The album included popular tracks such as “Besharam Rang” and “Jhoome Jo Pathaan,” along with instrumental themes composed by Sanchit and Ankit Balhara. The music was released in Hindi as well as dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu.
Controversies
Before release, the film faced controversies related to one of its songs, “Besharam Rang.” Some groups objected to certain visuals and costumes, leading to public debates and protests in a few regions. The Central Board of Film Certification reviewed the film and suggested minor modifications before granting it a U/A certificate. Despite the discussions and protests, the film released successfully with security arrangements in place in several states.

Reception
Box Office
Pathaan set multiple box-office records upon release and emerged as one of the biggest Hindi film successes. It became the first Hindi film to cross ₹100 crore worldwide on its opening day, earning around ₹106 crore globally, including strong collections from both India and overseas markets. The film recorded the highest opening for a Hindi film in India at that time, with exceptional earnings in the domestic Hindi market as well as across all language versions.
The film continued its strong momentum by crossing ₹200 crore worldwide within two days, ₹300 crore in three days, and ₹400 crore in four days, becoming the fastest Hindi film to reach these milestones. In India, it quickly crossed the ₹200 crore and ₹300 crore marks within its first week, surpassing previous records held by the Hindi version of KGF: Chapter 2. By its second weekend, it became the first original Hindi film to cross ₹400 crore net at the domestic box office.
Internationally, the film performed exceptionally well, collecting around US$25 million during its extended opening weekend overseas. IMAX collections were among the highest for an Indian film. In North America, the movie achieved record-breaking earnings for a Hindi film and continued strong runs in the UK, UAE, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and several other territories. It eventually became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films overseas without a release in China.
As the theatrical run progressed, Pathaan achieved several major milestones, including becoming the first Hindi film to cross ₹500 crore net in India. It later entered the ₹1000 crore worldwide club, becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. The film also performed strongly in South Indian markets, becoming the first Hindi film to cross ₹100 crore in that region. With millions of tickets sold worldwide, trade analysts declared the film an all-time blockbuster. By April 2023, the film’s worldwide gross exceeded ₹1,050 crore, making it one of the most successful films in Shah Rukh Khan’s career.
Critical Response
Pathaan received generally positive reviews from critics. Review aggregator websites showed favourable ratings, with critics praising its large-scale action, star performances, and entertainment value, while some reviews mentioned that the film relied heavily on spectacle over realism.
In India, many critics appreciated the film as a complete commercial entertainer. Reviewers highlighted Shah Rukh Khan’s screen presence, high-energy action sequences, music, and stylish presentation. Several publications described the film as a mass-action spectacle filled with strong performances and engaging moments. Critics also praised the chemistry between the lead actors and the film’s contribution to the expanding spy universe.
However, some reviews offered mixed opinions, pointing out over-the-top action scenes and occasional storytelling issues. Despite these criticisms, many reviewers agreed that the film successfully delivered a crowd-pleasing theatrical experience with strong entertainment value.
International critics gave varied responses. Some praised the film for its energetic action, star power, and cinematic scale, while others felt the narrative was exaggerated or uneven. Even among mixed reviews, the performances of the lead actors and the film’s ambitious action style received recognition.
