Bandreddi Sukumar is one of the most respected and successful filmmakers in Telugu cinema. He is known for writing strong stories, complex characters, and heroes with grey shades rather than typical commercial formulas. With massive box-office success across India, Sukumar today stands as the third highest-grossing Indian film director of all time and is also among the highest-paid directors in the industry.
Before entering films, Sukumar worked as a mathematics and physics lecturer at a junior college in Kakinada for nearly seven years. His journey into cinema started as a writer, where he worked with Editor Mohan. Later, he gained valuable experience by assisting director V. V. Vinayak for the film Dil (2003).
Sukumar made his directorial debut with Arya (2004), which became a blockbuster and established him as a promising filmmaker. The film won him the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu and the Nandi Award for Best Screenplay, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.
Over the years, Sukumar delivered several memorable films such as Arya 2 (2009), 100% Love (2011), 1: Nenokkadine (2014), and Nannaku Prematho (2016). His rural drama Rangasthalam (2018) turned into a huge sensation and became the third highest-grossing Telugu film at that time, only behind the Baahubali series.
Sukumar reached pan-India stardom with Pushpa: The Rise (2021), which became the highest-grossing Indian film of that year. Its sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024), broke multiple records and went on to become one of the highest-grossing Indian films ever.
Apart from directing, Sukumar is also a successful producer under his banner Sukumar Writings. Films like Kumari 21F (2015), Uppena (2021), and Virupaksha (2023) were well received by audiences and performed strongly at the box office.
In recognition of his contribution to Telugu cinema, Sukumar was honoured with the K. V. Reddy Memorial Award in 2014.
