Plot
In 1847, a king searching for peace receives a sacred stone from a forest protected by the demigod Panjurli and grants land to the villagers in return. The deity warns that breaking the promise will bring consequences.
In 1970, the king’s descendant tries to reclaim the land, but a Bhoota Kola performer named Annappa warns him and later mysteriously disappears. Soon after, the descendant dies under mysterious circumstances.
Twenty years later, forest officer Murali attempts to turn the villagers’ land into a forest reserve. He faces opposition from Kaadubettu Shiva, a Kambala athlete and Annappa’s son, who refuses to perform the traditional Bhoota Kola due to his father’s disappearance. As tensions rise, conflicts grow between villagers, forest officials, and landlord Devendra.
Devendra secretly plots to seize the land and kills Shiva’s cousin Guruva after he refuses to help. Shiva eventually learns the truth and joins forces with Murali to protect the village. A violent clash follows, during which Shiva is spiritually possessed by Guliga and defeats Devendra and his men.
Later, Shiva performs Bhoota Kola and is possessed by Panjurli. The villagers unite, Leela is revealed to be pregnant, and Shiva mysteriously disappears into the forest, hinting at a spiritual connection with his father.

Production
Development
Director Rishab Shetty said the film’s main theme is the conflict between nature and human beings. The story was inspired by real tensions between forest officers and villagers in his hometown Keradi, Karnataka, during the 1990s. He developed the idea during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2021. The title Kantara refers to a mysterious forest and reflects the film’s cultural and spiritual roots.
Filming
The film presents three timelines — 1847, the 1970s, and the 1990s. Since historical references were limited, the team worked closely with local tribal communities in Keradi to ensure authenticity. Filming took place in real forest locations, where detailed village sets were built, including temples, schools, and a Kambala racetrack. Rishab Shetty trained for four months to perform the Kambala sequence.
Music
The music was composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath, using folk-inspired sounds and traditional instruments. Many songs were influenced by local tribal and harvest music.
A legal dispute arose over the song “Varaha Roopam,” which was accused of resembling another track. The song was temporarily modified but later restored after a private settlement in 2023.

Kantara was released in Kannada on 30 September 2022 in over 250 theatres across Karnataka, along with international releases in the US, UK, Europe, Middle East, and Australia.
Following its strong success, the film was dubbed and released in multiple languages:

Legacy and Impact
Following the success of Kantara, the Government of Karnataka introduced a monthly allowance scheme for Bhoota Kola performers aged above 60, recognizing their cultural contribution and traditional art form.
Prequel
A prequel titled Kantara: Chapter 1 was announced, with reports stating that Rishab Shetty sought permission from the deity Panjurli before beginning the project. Filming started in November 2023, and the first look was released on 27 November 2023. The film was released on 2 October 2025.
Legal Issues
The song “Varaha Roopam” faced legal trouble after the Kerala band Thaikkudam Bridge accused the makers of plagiarism, claiming similarities with their song “Navarasam.” A Kozhikode court temporarily restricted the use of the song on streaming platforms. However, the case was later resolved through a private settlement, and the Kerala High Court quashed the criminal proceedings.
