After a long wait, The Girlfriend, starring national crush Rashmika Mandanna, finally arrived in theatres. The film had created a fair amount of buzz before release — mostly for its emotional theme, soothing music, and Rashmika’s return to Telugu cinema in a lead role. But once the show starts rolling, it becomes clear that the movie doesn’t live up to the excitement.
While Rashmika gives it her best, the storytelling is slow and flat. The movie fails to hold the audience’s attention for most parts, except towards the end.
Story Overview
The story follows a young woman’s emotional journey through love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. It’s a simple and relatable idea, but the way it unfolds feels stretched and repetitive. Rashmika Mandanna is easily the best thing about The Girlfriend. She brings honesty and charm to her role. Especially in the climax, her emotional depth shines through beautifully. You can feel the pain and maturity in her eyes — a reminder of why she’s one of the most loved actresses today.
Dheekshith Shetty delivers a decent performance as the male lead. He supports Rashmika well, though the weak script doesn’t give him much to do. Anu Emmanuel appears only in a few scenes, but she manages to leave a soft impression. She deserved a little more screen time.
Music & Technical Aspects
The music by Hesham Abdul Wahab feels like a missed opportunity. He’s composed some lovely and emotional tracks, but the director hasn’t used them properly. The songs could have lifted many dull moments, yet they appear without much emotional connection.
On the visual side, the film looks pleasant. The cinematography is clean, and the production values are strong. However, the editing could have been much tighter. The slow pacing and repetitive scenes make even well-shot moments feel long.
