Shivaji Rao Gaikwad (born 12 December 1950), professionally known as Rajinikanth, is an Indian actor who predominantly works in Tamil cinema. With a career spanning over five decades, he has acted in around 170 films across Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Bengali languages. Widely regarded as one of the most successful and popular actors in Indian cinema history, he has received some of India’s highest honours, including the Padma Bhushan (2000), Padma Vibhushan (2016), the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2019), and the IFFI Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to world cinema.

Rajinikanth made his acting debut in K. Balachander’s Apoorva Raagangal (1975) and initially portrayed antagonistic roles before gaining recognition for his performances in Bhuvana Oru Kelvi Kuri (1977), Mullum Malarum (1978), and Aval Appadithan (1978), earning a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for the former. His breakthrough came with the dual role in Billa (1980), which established him as an action star, followed by notable successes such as Moondru Mugam (1982), Andhaa Kaanoon (1983), and Nallavanukku Nallavan (1984). During the late 1980s, he delivered several successful films in both Tamil and Hindi cinema, firmly establishing his superstardom.

In the 1990s, Rajinikanth earned critical acclaim with Thalapathi (1991) and achieved massive commercial success with films like Annaamalai (1992), Baashha (1995), Muthu (1995), and Padayappa (1999). After a brief hiatus, he returned with record-breaking blockbusters such as Chandramukhi (2005), Sivaji (2007), Enthiran (2010), and 2.0 (2018). His recent films Jailer (2023) and Coolie (2025) further strengthened his legacy, making him the only Tamil actor with three films crossing the ₹500 crore mark. Known for his distinctive style, dialogue delivery, and immense fan following, Rajinikanth has also been named among the most influential personalities in South Asia and India’s most influential person of 2010 by Forbes India.

Awards & Honours

Rajinikanth has received numerous awards and recognitions for his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema, especially Tamil films. He won his first and only Filmfare Award for Best Tamil Actor in 1984 for Nallavanuku Nallavan. He was later nominated for Filmfare Awards for his performances in Sivaji (2007) and Enthiran (2010). As of 2014, he has won six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and also received several honours from Cinema Express and Film Fans’ Association for both his on-screen performances and off-screen contributions as a writer and producer.

The Government of Tamil Nadu honoured Rajinikanth with the Kalaimamani Award (1984) and the prestigious M. G. R. Award (1989). In 1995, he received the Kalaichelvam Award from the South Indian Film Artistes’ Association. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016, India’s third and second highest civilian awards. In 2007, he was named Indian Entertainer of the Year by NDTV and also received the Raj Kapoor Award from the Government of Maharashtra. He was later honoured with the Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Award at the Vijay Awards.

Rajinikanth’s influence goes far beyond cinema. He was named one of the most influential personalities in South Asia by Asiaweek and was ranked India’s Most Influential Person of 2010 by Forbes India. He received the Entertainer of the Decade Award from NDTV in 2011 and was listed among the “25 Greatest Global Living Legends” in 2013. In 2014, he was honoured with the Indian Film Personality of the Year Award at IFFI. He received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 67th National Film Awards ceremony in 2021, and in 2025, he was honoured with the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Film Festival of India.
