Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, popularly known as NTR, is not just an actor or a politician — he is an era in Telugu history. Born on 28 May 1923 and passed away on 18 January 1996, NTR left an unforgettable impact on cinema, culture, and politics.
NTR worked as an actor, director, producer, writer, editor, philanthropist, and later became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He served as CM for nearly seven years across four terms and founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982 — the first powerful regional party in Andhra Pradesh.
In Indian cinema, NTR is regarded as one of the most influential actors of all time. He acted in more than 300 films, mainly in Telugu cinema, and earned the legendary title
“Viswa Vikhyatha Nata Sarvabhouma” — meaning Universally Renowned Actor.
NTR was one of the earliest method actors in Indian cinema. In 2013, on the occasion of 100 years of Indian cinema, he was voted as the “Greatest Indian Actor of All Time” in a national CNN-IBN poll — a rare honour achieved by very few.
NTR’s Cinema Journey
NTR made his acting debut with Mana Desam (1949), directed by L. V. Prasad. His breakthrough came with Raju Peda (1954), after which his career took off rapidly.
During the 1960s, NTR became a household name by portraying Hindu gods like Lord Krishna, Rama, and Shiva. These roles turned him into a messiah of the masses, and his divine portrayals remain unmatched even today.

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao began his film journey with the Telugu social drama Mana Desam (1949), directed by L. V. Prasad. After this, he acted in Palletoori Pilla (1950), and his major breakthrough came with Raju Peda (1954), which made audiences take serious notice of his acting power.
The Divine Performances That Created History
In 1957, NTR entered mythology with Mayabazar, portraying Lord Krishna — a role that turned him into a legend overnight. That single performance redefined mythological cinema. Over his career, NTR played Krishna in 17 films, including unforgettable classics like

and evergreen classics Mayabazar (1957) and Nartanasala (1963) brought Telugu cinema global recognition.
For Nartanasala, NTR went to extraordinary lengths — at the age of 40, he learnt Kuchipudi dance from legendary guru Vempati Chinna Satyam just to perform his role with perfection. That dedication defined him.
NTR – The Complete Filmmaker
In the later phase of his career, NTR also became a screenwriter and producer. Without any formal training, he wrote scripts not only for his own films but also for other producers. Through his production house National Art Theater Private Limited, Madras, he produced several notable films.
He also founded Ramakrishna Studios, first at Musheerabad and later at Nacharam, in memory of his eldest son Nandamuri Ramakrishna Sr. He played a key role in strengthening the financial structure of Telugu cinema, helping in movie production, distribution, and theatre expansion.
One of his co-produced films, Ummadi Kutumbam, was selected by the Film Federation of India as an entry to the 1968 Moscow Film Festival — a proud moment for Telugu cinema.
From Kings to Common Man Heroes
As times changed, NTR transitioned from royal and mythological roles to powerful working-class characters who fought injustice and social evils. These roles connected deeply with the masses.

His final film was Srinatha Kavi Sarvabhowmudu (1993), a biographical drama on the great Telugu poet Srinatha — a fitting end to a legendary journey.
